Since the late 80’s, answering machines have had voice mail capabilities like that of cell phones using a touch tone keypad, but relatively few people are aware of this feature. Most upon purchasing an answering machine for their house simply plug it in, set a greeting, and leave it, without setting a code for remotely checking their messages. For fun, whenever you are about to leave a message anyway, try typing 1234 and see if you can get to the special menu that lets you control playing back messages and recording custom greetings. There are a variety of default passwords, of course, as manufacturers do not program their answering machines with identical settings. To see a list of default codes, here’s a guide that demonstrates what to do and some common codes to check your voice mail. If you skim through the article you will see that knowing the brand of machine you’re dealing with helps greatly. If you need more information, try Google. You can now leave that special someone a gag holiday greeting… for their callers! Disclaimer: Do not try this on anyone other than people you know, such as your parents!
